Relationship of Cow Size, Cow Requirements, and Production Issues
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Proper nutritional status is critical for optimal production efficiency in the beef cow herd. Meeting the nutrient requirements of the productive cow is a prime factor in the cow’s reproductive success and overall herd profitability. However, beef producers often take a “one size fits all” approach to feeding the cows in the cow herd. This singular approach to nutrient supply for the cow herd can have nutritional and economic ramifications. Nutritional requirements vary with age, breed, sex, body condition, environment, physiologic status, and body weight (BW). It should be obvious that not all cows have the same nutrient requirements. By acknowledging differences in nutrient requirements that exist in the beef cow herd, management strategies can be implemented to feed beef herds to optimize pasture forages, feed resources, and overall production.

Cow size has been suggested to be an important consideration for selecting cattle to match their production environment. Over the last several decades, the trend in genetic selection for maximum growth has led to gradual increases in beef cow size. An unrelated trend during this same period in the western United States has been an increase in temperature, drought frequency, and drought severity...

Successful pasture-based milk production systems pivot on balancing dairy cows’ feed requirements with seasonal and annual fluctuations in pasture production. In order to maximise cow production from grazing dairy systems, it is necessary to reach an efficient utilization of grazed grass for feeding cows and the development of appropriate grazing management systems designed to maximize daily pa...

Direct reproductive traits as they are currently measured tend to be low in heritability, making the environment a beef female is produced in key to reproductive success. Large cow size and high milk production translate into increased energy and protein requirements for the cow, even when not lactating. The increased nutrient requirements can significantly limit the carrying capacity of any fa...

The final goal of all dairy cow raising systems in the world is to use the available capacities and the cooperation of other sectors in order to solve the problems and issues, such as the limitations in time, man power and financial resources, for providing a complete answer. Therefore, the need for optimization of cow raising systems by prioritization of measures and plans is the most obvious ...
